A Book & A Blog: Before I Fall

What! Another blog post? Just shattap! HAHAHA

What is your worst fear?

For me, I grew up fearing death. I'm now openly blaming it (death) for my nocturnal life. I was in the third grade when I first developed this "I-can't-sleep" habit and it was because I just feared that if I sleep I will never have the chance to wake up again. My awesome family (mother side - the Apostol's) are very open on discussing funeral plans about each other, just openly killing off each other and telling each other what they want in the event of their gruesome death. Growing up, I was not spared for this talks and I guess, I've learned to be immune about it, and like them, have a good laugh about death.

Which brings us to this... Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall. "What if you only had one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?" Woah! Before I Fall is about Sam - Samantha Emily Kingston on Cupid's Day (Feb 12) and how she died by the end of the day - what's worst is that she has to relive February 12 seven times. The ending did not explicitly say that Sam died, but from the looks of it, I'm betting that she did.

Like the previous book I've read, Before I Fall also dealt with "bullying" hello Abigail, if you're reading this, I think sign na 'to para magbago ka na at magpakabait - you know, bully. There's one character in this book that was being bully all throughout her life, Juliet Skyes. Almost on all days that Sam lived (the 6 days actually), Juliet dies - either by shooting herself or running towards a moving van or truck; but on the 7th day, Sam's last day, she was able to save Juliet from dying and instead Sam dies.

To be honest, somewhere along the first one hundred pages, I was casually turning the pages. Getting bored because although Sam does something unusual, it is the same February 12 after all. But as the second February 12 ended, that's when things get really exciting (for me) and I just have to see what happens next.

Not your ordinary young-adult fan fiction and a definite must read. (someday, I swear, I'll come across a "don't bother reading this" book, but for now, go ahead and read this yourself!)

"It's funny, isn't it? When you are young you just want to be old, and then later you wish you could go back to being a kid."
