A Book & A Blog: Thirteen Reasons Why

Ever started a book and have completely no idea what to expect? Well, I sort of knew the story but I never expected the feeling that I will be having after reading. I've got my copy of Thirteen Reasons Why ages ago and thanks to my trusty "TBR Jar" (To Be Read Jar), I was finally able to read it. I mean, who wouldn't be enticed to just take a good look of the black and white cover of a girl in a swing, with that odd spelling of the book medyo jeje feeling dahil sa Th1rteen R3asons Why yung title.

A page turner. Thirteen Reasons Why written by Jay Asher is about a certain Hannah Baker who committed suicide. I had things going on (yesss, I was cramming for a final requirement while finding the time to read it), so I most often read before going to bed and I would most often stay up early morning just reading.

Disturbingly good. Imagine you're reading a suicide note but in this case it was not just a note but a novel. The more disturbing things are because I'm reading with Clay's perspective. That feeling that I'm not only hearing Hannah but also feeling what Clay feels while listening to Hannah.

Mixtapes. Lakas maka-hipster feeling. Hannah gave out mixtapes to tell her "story". It is creepy to read a note, but imagine hearing suicidee's voice - not just saying goodbye, but blaming you for it. Actually, what's peculiar to this story is that, there are thirteen people who are to blame except for Clay and they have to listen to the mixtapes Hannah created. After listening, they have to mail the said mixtapes to the "next person" on Hannah's list.

Bullying. Hannah Baker committed suicide primarily because of bullying. One guy spread rumors about her. Hannah's just a new kid, trying to get along and poof! She tried coping. She ignored it. However, things got really bad and she felt like there's nothing else that can be done but to take her own life - end the misery.

Hopelessness. Like Clay, I wanted to do something but it was too late. Actually, I was thinking of what to do if I personally knew someone who's planning to commit suicide. But I have no idea on what do. Ah, the hopelessness and emptiness!

So go ahead, read the story of Hannah Baker. Let's stop bullying all-together.
And yes, this story would make a good movie. Would love to see it!
